I think this guy sums it up pretty well. I like both, but overall might like III more. I played the NES emulated a long time ago and the DS one more recently, I loved both. I like the simplicity of the story, V's just feels like it meanders around. I might be influenced though because I accidentally bought the arranged soundtrack way back before I knew that what we had as FF III was actually VI and that album fucking rocks. So when I did then get around to the real FF III it was with that in my mind.

To me that's the best part. It's the test of your skills and your resource management. It's a gauntlet because it's supposed to be a gauntlet, it's the final dungeon, it should be a challenge. At least that's how I like it.
