When it comes to the example setups for balanced gameplay, it is specifically in locations for where pickup weapons/equipment spawns at, where the objectives would be, and where spawn points are. How you lay out the terrain past that point is entirely up to you. You are able to be pretty freeform with the terrain setup.

Things being based around 3" cubes does mean the terrain might look a bit blocky, and the 8x8 grid on top of that means you have to focus on key areas of a terrain, but you can still get some good results, like this High Ground set that someone made in attached pic.
