I can point to the specific game that sent gaming on a downward spiral.

1)It killed dedicated servers: before this game multiplayer gaming was between the player and the community that he could find in the public server of his choice. This created a friendly environment where the community itself was in charge of setting the limits and enforcing its own rules. Cheating only existed in servers that didnt have active admins and what was considered acceptable behavior was determined by esch community.
MW2 killed this and normalized multiplayer being between the player and a giant corporation that would hist servers and choose how could you behave and who you could play against.
2)It was the first AAA game to be made for consoles and then ported to Pc and not the other way around. This meant that every game from now on had to be developed with console hardware limitations in mind. So, while developing for PC meant the gameplay limitations were limited by the kewyboard bindings, after MW2 you had to stick to just the inputs that could be handled by a controller. Same thing with graphics, no point developing anything that wouldnt run on the ancient hardware of current gen consoles.

DLC: before this game, map packs werent even a thing, developers just released free shit with new patches.

So in a few words, this game killed old school multiplayer-community based gaming and changed it to a profit seeking-corporate bullshit- lowest common denominator hobby.
