I genuinley think something like an LLM would be perfect for Animal Crossing. People have been complaining about villagers having too few lines or losing their personalities through monotonously having the same lines or mannerisms too closely with other villagers of the same personality class. If each villager had their own character card they could adhear to slight or subtle differences in their overall personality while keeping the general prompts the same.
Assuming all this is baked into a single executable game file I wouldn't expect the player to fine tune any models, but I think it'd be reasonable for some controls to be given such as adjusting temperature (how varied vs safe responses get) or general tone (maturity, kindness vs bluntness or realistic negative emotions).
Just imagine it
>villagers recall former conversations and your feelings/inputs on them
>mail isn't just a copy and pasted response but actually thought out and appropriately built upon with responses
>town billboard posts are actually read and factored into daily conservation and contexts
>even if multiple people group chats can't be done, having villagers communicate and share information in the background to simulate spreading information will add livliness to each other
I know the feelings many have regarding LLMs and generative AI especially with AAA game studios, but if it were handled correctly it could lead to the most immersive and cool Life Sim experience the likes of which we have yet to realize.
