Population: Growing, Wild World, and City Folk are all good, just different from one another. The dual screen and wiimote control gimmicks are nowhere near as annoying as people make them out to be, especially with a series like Animal Crossing that doesn't require fast reaction times or precision control.
New Leaf set the ground work for everything wrong with the series in current day. It started to rewrite the Animal Crossing fundamentals and made way for the total overhaul that was New Horizon. Animal Crossing stopped being a life sim where you moved into a new, unknown world and became friendly with the locals into your own personal sandbox where you get to play god with the lives of its inhabitants. Everyone is nice to you non-stop, villagers can no longer make their own decisions and cannot leave your island without your input, the facilities are completely at your mercy, and even the very ground itself can be terraformed to your will. It is basically The Sims: Furry Edition now.
And because it came out at the exact right time (right when everyone became locked inside their homes for 9+ months), it gained an artificial boost in popularity and sales since people had nothing better to do, giving Nintendo all the wrong information and ensuring the franchise will stray further and further from what made the original entries so special.
