And this was even worst in Japan. Prime and I'm not exaggerating when I say this. Prime almost killed the brand in Japan. Transformers went from toys you could find anywhere to being stuff you had to ask the employee to retrieve from the back. The show was even less well received, it was the second worst viewed show in it's timeslot over there. Prime was so badly recieved in Japan, they prematurely cut off the series and then made their own show just to try and recoup some losses, resulting in "Triple Combination: Transformers Go". This was particularly bad as in contrast Transformers Animated was extremely successful in Japan.
If you're wondering this is why Japan got certain exclusive figures in the Prime line. They were trying to do anything to try and make it sell over there.
Prime's failure in Japan also had longstanding consequences on the brand as a whole. It's why we don't see Takara versions of the Hasbro toys anymore, or if we do they're in limited quantities. Usually Takara just uses the Hasbro versions now, whereas before Takara would have their own version of the toyline usually with unique aspects (think the arms microns from Prime).
So Hasbro was desperate to try and fix things on the toy side and hoped the "Beast Hunters" rebrand would do the trick. It didn't.
By the end of it all Hasbro's ambitions for Prime to be the launch off point for their new continuity had completely failed. The show ended with a movie that just did the same song and dance the show had been doing and hasbro decided to take the next show in a different direction from what Prime had done. Doing something that closer in style to what had worked in the past (TFA) while omitting all the issues the Prime show caused.
So you might say "RID was horrible toddler shit" but at least it wasn't "horrible overpriced shit".
Anyway that was my Ted Talk on why Prime actually sucks.
I don't really have a good pic for this so have early concept art of some characters.
