This might sound kind of weird, but I genuinely think the Lord of the Rings influence at the time helped them to flesh out Midna's character. It's a confirmed influence on Twilight Princess straight from Aonuma's mouth, and those movies really knew how to develop characters through small interactions that made their relationships feel real.
