I've never liked any of these games and I honestly dont like design philosophy around level design that rewards persistance with death looped back around to a form of grinding. Imagine for example you are playing diablo but you are expected to die multiple times and start over from the beginning to pad out the game when the game is already padded to hell and back.

About the only game with rogue like elements I ever tolerated was this wierd korean slop I got almost for free called metal unit doing a challenge run where I didnt treat it like a rogue like, and lennas inception which actually doesn't encourage you to die in order to progress and grind up but instead just has the more normal random level generation. I would have preffered more tightly designed dungeons though by far for lenna and only it's charm (graphics and sound, not story, which is awful), kept me playing it. if you are making a Links Awakening like I highly recommend listening to lennas OST
