You can certainly do some training with .22; grip, presentation, trigger pulls, sight alignment, not to mention having a ton of fun. But ultimately THE hurdle to handgun shooting is recoil, which you cannot practice with .22. Your monkey brain will destroy everything else you've worked for once you introduce recoil. If you want to learn to shoot handguns, you'll have to practice with 9mm or greater. That said .22 is fine as an introductory gun and like I said it'll always be a fun addition to your stable! I still use .22 to "warm up" when I haven't shot for awhile and I ALWAYS bring at least one .22 just because low recoil is a hoot to shoot
Side note: if your goal is to carry, you need to get started on making recoil part of your training, and because your control of it fades with time you need to keep on it
