Doom 2016 was closer to that zeitgeist of gameplay mods people were making for both GZDoom and Z& a decade ago, when the two weren't exactly in parity but at least a bit closer. And thus we got things like D4D and D4T simultaneously with different design philosophies, even MetaDoom joining the bandwagon in adding 2016 things. It was also the first actual new Doom game in a long time as well, so its sequels probably didn't have the same freshness.
What mods do people even play for not-nu-Doom these days? I imagine these kinds of projects have some odd successors.
