The console(+handheld) market has been essentially stagnant since the 2000s, the growth in "gaming" over the past 20 years has come almost entirely from phone shit and PC games (Minecraft, Roblox).
Pokémon was the biggest thing in the world period in the year 2000, 100% universal pop-culture saturation, everyone and their grandmother knew what Pikachu was.
So again I will reiterate that "the Switch Pokémon games are selling better than ever only because of 'brand recognition'" is completely asinine and that "no people just weren't as into video games back then when that console sold 150 million units compared to now with this console selling 150 million units" doesn't make any fucking sense
