The goal isn't to make the Chair Force guys already serving lose heart, it's to

>intimidate prospective enlistees, which in turn results in the Chair Force losing increasing numbers of men to natural attrition (retirements, non-renewal of enlistment contracts, removals due to disciplinary issues, etc.) and being unable to replace them
>increase turnover for high stress positions such as drone pilots (who already have a notoriously bad turnover rate)
>counter the United States government's narrative that it can simply bomb whomever it wants with total impunity
>sow the seeds of doubt in the politicians running the war by showing what will happen to them if they keep fighting and wind up losing
>induce defections (this usually happens in the later stages when the government is very clear a lost cause)

The Taliban used this strategy of targeted killings of personnel and their immediate families against the Afghan Air Force and it was highly effective at whittling down its effectiveness.
