What's so bad about my ego anyway? And why do I have to kill it?

I often hear eastern traditions and christian mystics say that to do those "unatural things", devotion to a higher power, clear mind, meditation and purity it's a must, but others usually the wicca,chaos magick crowd say "do whatever you want" etc. Which is more powerful?
