It's not even a straight rehash because it continues the idea of reformation that Maximus' story ended on Everybody else is continuing the story BUT the one person who should have been, that being Lucius. Instead of being directly involved with Acacius, Lucilla, and Gracchus, they have him off doing little Gladiator vignettes for no reason while the plot happens inbetween those incredibly embarrassing action sequences with no purpose in the plot.
For reference, the plot purpose of the Coliseum and being a gladiator was to connect with the people of Rome. It was to stir the uprising and expode Commodus and the corruption of the senate. In Gladiator II the literal opening crawl and several sequences are dedicated to establishing and portraying that said uprising is and had already been occuring. Lucius' gladiator fights and the theme of the Colisuem being a world stage have no purpose in the sequel.
It's so fucking stupid it's unreal. I loved the overarching story and a lot of story beats, I even warmed to the idea of Lucius returning to Rome, but they completely butchered him and the otherwise great story and cast they had.
