Wailea is really just mega-resorts. It's the perfect idyllic Hawaii you see on TV. "Overpriced" is relative. When I went, we found a massive 2 bedroom condo across from the beach for $230/night. We rented a car and drove all over the Island. We had a kitchen, so we cooked a few meals at home and then splurged on a few expensive dinners. We also stayed 3 nights at the grand Wailea just to mix it up. But the prices have doubled since we were there 7 years ago. I haven't been back.
