There's this really awesome gift shop in Webster Springs that sells lathed wood bowls for good prices that I want to visit - last time I was there I was there on a Sunday when they were closed. There's also a farm-fresh meats store if it hasn't closed either - Spillman Meats just nearby.
It's too bad most of the nearby land is still owned by paper/mine/timber companies and not the people. And the land owned by the people is mostly neglected.

Wailea is really just mega-resorts. It's the perfect idyllic Hawaii you see on TV. "Overpriced" is relative. When I went, we found a massive 2 bedroom condo across from the beach for $230/night. We rented a car and drove all over the Island. We had a kitchen, so we cooked a few meals at home and then splurged on a few expensive dinners. We also stayed 3 nights at the grand Wailea just to mix it up. But the prices have doubled since we were there 7 years ago. I haven't been back.

America isn't always cheaper. If you're going coast to coast in the US, you're paying $350+. A roundtrip flight to Europe from NYC, Chicago, or LAX is $500. When you get to Europe, the food is cheaper, there are decent cheap hotels and you don't need a car. A 1 week Disney Vacation is way more expensive than 2 weeks in any country in Europe.

My flight roundtrip this time was $480 from LAX to Amsterdam. I went to Madrid last year for $460 roundtrip.

I used to do a lot of National Parks in the US when I was in my 20's. You can do them really cheaply if you camp. A yearly pass that includes the entrance fee to every US national park is $80. Most national parks have campgrounds for less that $50 a night. In Utah, you can camp for free on pretty much any BLM land. The whole state is practically BLM land. You could go to Utah and do Zion, Bryce, Arches, Capitol Reef and Canyonlands and spend weeks camping for free right outside the parks. But you want to go to Gatlinburg....

I've actually put off doing Paris for a long time. I've been to France twice and I never did Paris. I did a road trip a few years ago and hit a lot of smaller places in the south. We drove all over Provence. We did Aix, Gourdes, Cassis, Nimes, Arles, Orange, the Pont du Gard, La Ciotat, Roussillon and Avignon. French bakeries, wine from country side vineyards, the massive cathedrals, Roman ruins, the little seaside towns on the Riviera, the chateaus, the ruined castles, the abbeys....These are things you can't experience in Pigeon Forge my brother.

There are a lot beautiful places in the US far outside of cities. I don’t just mean national parks either though Pigeon Forge is next to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and there is a lot of natural beauty there and trails and different varieties of cabins (both the rustic type and the luxury type). Even in Pigeon Forge or Gatlinburg proper there are a lot of nice scenic views and newer cideries and wineries (used to be a dry area) and I don’t just mean just the ones in the touristy districts. There is nothing wrong with the kitschy tourist slop either. It’s Americana and can be charming in its own right especially the vintage stuff. But you’re right you can take a long road trip and stay at cheap hotels and see all kinds of beautiful places. I have done the red River gorge, several times actually. The best thing about the gorge is Miguel's Pizza afterwards.

Indiana has a lot of wild cave systems. A lot of them were closed off or restricted for years because of the white nose syndrome that the bats get. They're in a caving group, so they know all the spots. Clifty Falls in Madison is a cool spot. Cool little town too.

But comparing the dinky Red River Gorge to Chamonix??!!! That's almost as dumb as Paris and Pigeon Forge. You go to France and take the gondola up to the Aiguille du Midi and then come back and tell me you think the red river gorge is better.

I love the touristy slop like I said earlier. Unironically. But I’ve been on a winery tour in the Finger Lakes area of NY and also in a winery tour of Northwestern Michigan. Rolling hills. Water. Nature. Beautiful. Beautiful bays and shores up there in Michigan along the Great Lakes. On the way we stayed at some inland lake that was shallow and calm and had beautiful clear green tinted water. And aside from a few rainbow flags up in Northwestern Michigan and a few obvious fags, everybody was normal and white. No brownoids. It was beautiful. The whole country is full of these kinds of places. Hidden and not so hidden gems. Western Florida has beaches consistently ranked among the best in the world even over Hawaii. Glacier National Park is incredible. Along the way to all of our natural beauty and tourist destinations you can stay in a wigwam hotel or the worldest largest potato. You can visit a museum in Philly with the world’s largest diseased colon. I love the kitsch. I love theming. Doesn’t mean I still don’t love nature, I’ve been on trails not far from Gatlinburg that take you to springs with waterfalls on top of rock shelves. And a lot of this is free and costs nothing. Go move to your precious Europe and marry a brown nippled Muslim woman or a negress. Or a big black Nigerian dude if you’re into that. There are plenty of them over there especially in France

The Smokies are beautiful and are the original tourist attraction in the area and still the main draw. The touristy stuff is there to give tourists something to do. Especially if you have kids (which for the majority of this board I realize is an alien concept). Kids get bored easily and can’t go on long hikes. Things like Anakeesta and the haunted house and Dollywood and all the stuff at Pigeon Forge are perfect for traveling families. It’s pretty easy to get to for anybody east of the Mississippi where the majority of our population lives. It can also be very affordable since there are so many hotels. The ones in Sevierville are cheaper. Or you can travel with multiple families and share a fancy cabin. It’s also worth going to regardless of season although summer is their peak season.

Branson is overhated. A friend let us use their timeshare a few years ago and I was dreading going there but wound up really liking it. The biggest critics of Branson, like that travel writer who called it the worst city to travel to, are all jewish. You gotta remember they’re essentially vampires who get triggered by any Christian symbolism which is why they secularist Christmas. The Christian stuff wasn’t bad at all. The Ozarks were nice, they have a theme park called Silver Dollar City which has the same owners as Dollywood and I liked it better. Table Rock Lake was nice. Yeah there are nice views. Maybe not so much on the Branson strip but off of it for sure. The terrain is very hilly, large hills that are part of the Ozark range. They look like the smaller parts of the Appalachians (and are thought to be geologically related to them, cut off by the Mississippi River basin is one theory).

I've been to every corner of Utah. I love it. Arches is one of my favorite parks. I went snowboarding and hiking in Utah this year in February. I had a great time. But it can't hold a candle to the Alps. The runs in Chamonix are 5 times longer. The food is 10 times better. The nightlife is 100 times better. The towns in France have history and culture. There's just no comparison.

So I just read through all the posts ITT because I also love places like Gatlinburg, Branson, Wisconsin Dells, St. Augustine, FL, the beaches of southern Maine, the Jersey Shore and all manner of kitsch, vintage tourism and roadside attraction related stuff. I actually happen to be somewhat of an intellectual authority of sorts on the subject. I'm writing a book, working on a google maps project documenting over 15,000 locations in the US with cultural or historical relevance and I am also a content creator with a lifelong passion for all this stuff.
This kind of stuff is so culturally underappreciated that it's sickening. I've been to many other countries and there is nothing out there that is quite like what we have in the US, and definitely not on the quantity or scale of what's out there. We are very blessed to have all the thousands of vintage drive-ins, amusement parks, quirky museums, muffler men and large fiberglass objects along the highways, tourist traps and destinations full of all the above and more. Not only does it make the US more fun to live in and travel to, especially if you only consider that stuff a side extra to all the national parks, mountain ranges and coastlines etc. it also makes traveling in the US a deeply cultural experience that is misunderstood thanks to unwarranted pretentiousness like the joker ITT who thinks Paris and all the obvious places that people compare the US to Europe to are objectively better for having good travel experiences. There just isn't as big of an assortment of things to easily enjoy in most of the rest of the world. We have everything conveniently located along our highways and byways with plenty of hotels, motels and good airbnbs in between. We've got the parks, we've got the museums and we've got the tourist stuff, and we've got by far the largest selection of dining options in every city and town compared to anywhere else in the world. To act like the US isnt one of the best countries in the world to travel is disingenuous. The big cities in Europe in 2025 are just as dangerous as they are here, and the cost of traveling to the "beautiful" hike-able places in Europe compared to the US is a major difference with the US winning in value by a massive margin. The cost of gas and lodging alone makes road tripping in other parts of the world essentially undoable. Road trips are the ultimate form of travel and tourism in the US was built on it so that's why we worship what's already here because it's fucking awesome. As an American on the east coast, the cost of traveling to Asia still averages out to much more than traveling domestically due to airfare alone. The current exchange rate is the only reason Japan is cheap once you get there. China and South Korea are some of the most expensive countries all around and SE Asia has always been cheap but isn't that much better than Florida or going on a cruise to the caribbean islands.

Food is not as expensive in the US compared to other countries as people claim. Yes inflation has caused prices to rise for some things but there are still plenty of good value options especially if you dont mind eating drive-in slop. Even some fast food chains like Cook Out in the south offer a crazy amount of food for $7 or $8. You can pick a main entree item, two sides and a large drink or milkshake and if you pick the right sides you can even feed two people with that much. Obviously you are going to pay a lot to eat at a restaurant with inflated menu prices and expected gratuity added. You basically get what you pay for here and if you want expensive quality food there are many options and if you want cheap slop there are endless options.
In Japan it's pretty much the same. You can go to Mos Burger and get a $4 sandwich or a ramen shop and have an $8 meal but if you want a steak or sushi you are paying easily as much as you would in the US, probably more at most places.
Europe is extremely overrated with food, especially in tourist areas which are the only places accessible to most tourists.
Even in Italy, Neapolitan pizza isnt even that good and the pasta dishes you get most places arent much better than a decent trattoria in US cities. Go to Germany, France and Scandinavia and eat some of the most bland BS imaginable. And food is quite pricey in those countries. SE Asia and places with street food vendors are really the only countries where the value of the food for what you're paying is a significant difference.

Everywhere in Japan should be way cheaper than their US counterparts. I was in Tokyo for my honeymoon and had a work conference in Manhattan the week after getting back. I know Manhattan is a massive shithole and it felt like being in a third world country after Tokyo but that is a top travel destination for a lot of people especially those abroad and the costs are asinine for the quality/experience offered.

The most disappointing things I've eaten in Germany were all the sausages I tried. When you order a bratwurst you get this tiny piece of crappy bread and the sausages all have a strange earthy taste that is reminiscent of dishwater and is off-putting and gross. Weisswurst is one of the worst tasting meat products by far. It's been there since the 1940s before the word was subverted. The MCM building facade facing the strand is exquisite and still looks the same 70 years later.
You used to be able to climb to the top of the tower which served as an overlook of the highway on one side and the ocean/beach on the other. It also used to have an amusement pier next to it and two blocks down was the legendary Pavilion amusement park. I was lucky enough to experience Myrtle at the end of it's golden era before the pavilion closed, and today most of the downtown/boardwalk area is unrecognizable compared to then, except for the Gay Dolphin Gift Cove thankfully.

One place where it does still thrive however, are the mountain towns of the US. I think there's something about the elevation that keeps the subhuman races away, even jews. Maybe being in higher altitudes makes you closer to god or the heavens or something like that. There is definitely something to it, because go anywhere in the US where there's mountains and its nothing but decent whites. Go to mountains in Peru, Nepal, Tibet or any mountain regions in the rest of the world and find the most peaceful decent examples of spiritual non-whites in the world. The mountains are definitely God's country and are seemingly untouchable. Even when you bring the tourist slop to a place like Gatlinburg, it still maintains a superior essence and humble clientele deserving of a place of peace and comfort unlike your shitty overpopulated yuropoor cities and tourist destinations which promise a standard outside the US but more often give you an even worse version of societal and economic decay ruining everything that was possibly once good, but probably even overhyped back then too.

No clue if that's true. I've never been to Paris. I did do Spain this year. We drove all around Andalusia. Seville is one of the best cities on earth. Every corner has a palace, a castle or a giant cathedral. There are live bands out at night in the plazas playing Castellento music. The food was amazing. Super friendly city. Amazing nightlife. It would be a good city for someone who just likes to wander around without an itinerary. You'd get a little more culture than what you'd find in DollyWood.
