People like heroics, people love romance. It is the perfect marraige of two of the most written about topics in human fiction. Make the big bad scary and you have a trifecta of action, romance and horror. When you look at older movies, especially action blockbusters, they pull from those 3 elements. You may have the Godfathers or the Donnie Darkos, but people still remember the action movies of the 70-80s or the block buster epics of the 60s
