I've noticed that there is a tonal difference in the Sky chests vs the Crossbell ones. Sky chests were mostly dad jokes while the Crossbell ones are more topical and more likely to bring up memes and such. It kinda works because Crossbell is far closer to resembling our modern day world than Liberl is.

Technically the treasure chest quotes aren't erasing or replacing anything from the Japanese script.
When Xseed was translating Trails in the Sky, they noticed that when you click on a chest it has a
>This chest is empty
message, but Falcom programmed it in a sloppy way so that instead of having one line that every chest refers too, they actually manually wrote 'This chest is empty' hundreds of times individually.
So the English version replaces all of that redundant text with a bunch of goofy jokes and meta observations.

When the series went 3D with Cold Steel, the treasure chests programming got redone so that the chest quotes were no longer able to exist. Of course, this brings up the question of "Will the chest jokes exist in the Sky remake?"
Falcom hasn't commented on it but signs are pointing to no. Kind of makes sense given that the remake is given to a new localisation team (Gungho) instead of Xseed or NISA. So a lot of the old injokes may be rewritten or replaced to make it more in-line with the original Japanese script.
