Ender Magnollia/Lillies are just nice, well-made metroidvanias or whatever you call em. Good art and sound direction, world, character designs, and so on. Exploration is pretty good and combat is fun enough. Not brutally challenging but not push-over easy, they felt challenging enough to be engaging in my opinion. They have that bleak and desolate world vibe going on so that's subjective but I liked it. Also Lilac and Lilly are cuties.

Disgaea really isn't that grindy when you're just doing the story missions, it's really only in the postgame when you want to get into all that. I'd recommend maybe giving the later EO titles on 3DS a try if you couldn't get into the older ones. The first two are kind of weak but from 3 onward is when the series really got good. Unless you just don't like dungeon crawler altogether then maybe they're just not for you. While they're not as "otaku-y" I'd recommend FF Tactics and Tactics Ogre if you like SRPGs and haven't played any versions of them yet.
