Majority of comp sci majors funnel into software engineering jobs. Since their job title has engineer in it they call themselves engineer. More and more software related jobs just started adding engineering to the title if you did any little bit of design/architecture work (Data engineer, Cloud Engineer, Network Engineer...)

Tldr: Blame the overlap with computer engineering.
