Classic case of Season 2 syndrome.
Season 1 is masterpiece that is an assemblage of ideas that have been brewing around in the creator's heads for decades. Season 2 is whatever they can come up with in the time between and ideas that weren't good enough for season 1.
You see it a lot and the better the first season is generally the more the second season misses its mark.
It also is a case of predecessor syndrome though. I think that if Season 2 had come out first it would've been better received, but season 1 is so good that it makes season 2 look bad.
