The entire thing about Kirk's murder reminds me Kirov's murder in early 1930s under Stalin. He was an old revulutionary hands up to the elbows in blood, but he was inconvenient for Stalin. His murder happened under murky circumstances and became an excuse for mass purging in the Party.
