Some current handhelds like the RP5 and Odin 2 are already capable of dual booting into aarch64 Linux. That might be their saving grace if emulator devs decide to jump ship from Android next year.

Control and data harvesting. Google wants to be the sole gatekeeper of what people are allowed to install on their devices, and tying everything to the Play Store and a Google account allows them to harvest more data to sell targeted ads (their main moneymaker).
