Random question: Has anyone else been having trouble installing Saturn.emu on their Android device from the .apk on Github? You might be mixing it with the Flop, that one actually got trashed by everyone (and rightfully so). The 35 does have some nasty flaws though, like the washed out screen, the dome piercing situation that requires washers that end up hindering button travel, and the dome stiffness, but it does feel like the novelty makes up for it.

but modern minui is bloated and with that came stupid bugs like cooking the cpu while in sleep mode.
simplemenu is alright once you figure out how to configure it. but i can see why you say it's shit. the user experience isn't that good (why have categories and subcategories?) and can fuck up itself if you press the wrong button in the wrong menu. i have a rg300x and edited simplemenu config files to my liking.
it is better than gmenu2x because it's simpler and less technical. but could be way better.

minui is a different beast than stock trimui...ui.
if it gave you the impression that it was just stock with tweaks is because it was made to look and feel similar, and just as simple and cohesive.
minui main menu is its own executable and so are the emulators, all separate from the stock emulators and all containing the same menu to make the user experience easier. no need to deal with each emulator menu with multiple options.

I have the Odin 2 Portal, and I'm satisfied with just switching screens while playing DS and 3DS. It's a 7-inch screen, so plenty of space for two screens at once, if I want.

Also, none of these emulators that support the dual screens have retroarch shaders. Playing DS without an LCD grid shader is disgusting to me.

How come there's no easy solution to turn any phone into a gameboy at this point? It's just a few buttons on a BT module and an attachemt mechanism to hold it on the phone. With actual mobile controllers starting at 50€, it should be easy to undercut them, especially with the popularity of cheap handhelds that come with worse parts than most phones. (Picrel is the closest I could find: its chonky as it takes cartridges.)

Is there much difference running games from internal storage vs an A2 SD card?

It's just curious to me watching people handwringing over what version of handheld to buy based on internal storage. Why not just buy a big SD and be done with it? When you buy another device swap it over to the new one and save some money. And even in the case of owning multiple devices dedicated to different systems that just means you would need less space for each individual one and therefore no need to buy max storage handhelds.

Since finding this general, I bought quite a few 'helds before returning/selling all but these:

The one I use the most. It plays PS1 and under and has a 720x720 screen, so it's a perfect 1:1 ratio that's great for GB(C) and SNES if you prefer using 8:7. It's also just the right size and has good ergonomics compared to the flat horizontal slabs Anbernic will put out. I wish they would go back to stuff like this and the 406H and 557, but they've learned from Retroid that people will just buy grips separately.

I'll use this for anything above PS1 up to Switch, and PC games of course, but honestly 90% of the time I'm emulating on it. Nice big OLED screen and tons of community support, setting emulators up is just a single install, and you can get whatever community plugins you want pretty easily.

Has the same performance of the CubeXX, (except for 2GB of RAM instead of 1GB, I heard this is mostly for Portmaster games, but I never used that so idk) but I got it to actually take outside since it's a clamshell, so I don't have to carry a case around or worry about damaging it. I also like to play GBA on it because the screen is a perfect 3:2 ratio vs. the CubeXX, and it's an SP clone of course.

I only have this to play DS/3DS games, because I never liked emulating DS games on a single screen. Famous modding scene that's a meme at this point, every 3DS and DS game is on demand which is nice. There's emulators for it as well, including the Virtual Boy which works nicely with the 3D mode, but it only goes up to SNES and some PS1. Now that dual screen emulation handhelds are coming out, I might sell this if they survive the next few months of user testing.

I think I'm done with my Chinese crap addiction for now, just waiting to see what happens with the dual screens and also convincing myself I don't need a smaller horizontal like the RP/Odin that does the same thing my Steam Deck does.

I've been playing Silent Hill for spooky season. I got it running on the Steam Deck and also on the TV, so I've been holding the handheld in my hands and actually comparing scenes to the TV in real time. The difference is so negligible that I frankly couldn't give a stuff, and the handheld at least gives me a full image with nothing cut off. I guess it helps playing the game on a 7 inch screen. I wouldn't like to make the same comparison against my computer monitor. I grew up with CRTs so I don't feel like I'm missing out really.

I've considered it, but I just can't bring myself to. I have 2TB of stuff on there and I've done quite a bit with it since I got it almost 2 years ago. It's come in clutch when I've went on long trips and couldn't lug a full PC with me. Even at home, I still like to dock it with a portable monitor and use it as a computer sometimes. The battery isn't even that bad on emulation in my experience, I can play like 5-6 hours of N64 at 100% brightness and still have like 20% battery life left. It only gets annoying when I play Switch, which lasts like 3 hours.

From what I understand, it's a change to Google Play Services. Meaning it will still effect older versions. And while you could get around that by installing MicroG or another equivalent, that won't be an option for at least 80% of Android users since you would need root access.
And that's without even considering the developers who are jumping ship because of this. Without anyone actually developing emulators for Android, the handheld industry vanishes overnight.

The Classic is better in just about every way unless you hate Android. The Brick is also more pocket friendly and less than half the price of the Classic. I'd say Brick if you just wanna play lightweight games, don't wanna break the bank too much, and plan to take it with you in your pocket most of the time. They're both good quality screens. The TrimUI Brick is IPS but it's probably the nicest and brightest IPS screen I own, and it has an unusually high resolution (1024 x 768 vs the standard 640 x 480 often found on these budget handhelds) so things look nice and crisp on it. It's a bit small though, just over 3 inches. Retroid Pocket Classic screen is a proper OLED and has a bigger 4 inch screen. However, it's worth keeping in mind that the screen ratio is almost a square vs the Brick being a proper 4:3. This obviously works best for Game Boy games since it's shaped like a Game Boy Color, but you'll have some black bars on 4:3 games vs being a perfect fit on the Brick.

As for the build, the Classic is definitely better to hold, it has the same butt that the GBC has and it's just bigger. The buttons on both devices are honestly both a bit too small and stiff for my liking compared to my Anbernic and Miyoo, but the Classic definitely has better shoulder buttons compared to the weird modular ones the Brick has. Both have a lot of extra buttons that you can assign to hotkeys. I think that they're both good devices, but I agree with >>12090972 that the Classic is probably better if you have the money, but the Brick is like $35 on AliExpress if you're willing to put up with the size and having a non-OLED screen.
