I think happiness could be a factor of not only relative economic wellbeing, but also religiosity. I know that might sound crazy, and I say this as an atheist myself, but I think religion could provide a necessary release from the stagnant, unfulfilled feeling in life you're describing. It might be why Japan and Korea score relatively low compared to the more religious west.
