Because in the 2010s there was a change in artistic philosophy where artists believed that the physical look of a character was competing with their narrative and personality aesthetics, and that reducing the conventional physical attractiveness of a character placed greater emphasis on the character's story arc and personality in the eyes of the audience.

Of course this backfired and people focused on the physical looks of a character more, because a character that doesn't look attractive brings as much attention as a character that looks extra attractive (average in this case would be considered not-attractive because attraction requires being above the average).

The result is that we got a bunch of ugly or imperfect characters that we obsessively complain about when the artists wanted us to see the characters "true self".

A rejection of this philosophy wouldn't be 1-dimensional attractive characters. Instead it would be having the writers take the lead and design the character's personality and story arc, then transferring the person to the artists for visual fulfillment.
