You have to understand that trends come and go. For a while, every single protagonist was a white guy with a buzzcut.
Around 2014 or 2015 we started seeing more diverse characters because during Obama, American game devs tricked themselves into thinking that race relations were solved and that the key to more profits is appeal to every single demographic possible. How does one do that? The solution, they figured, was to simply make every single game diverse, to represent everyone simultaneously.
This trend was brought forth by some very performative progressive types, usually consultants, who nobody really wanted to say no to. Muslim woman with vitiligo and a peg-leg? Sure, put her in the product. They think they're fighting the good fight whilst not realizing that they themselves have implicit biases. Even funnier is that they always come from upper-middle class backgrounds. Nobody who grew up in households where they had to skip dinner several times a week to save money wants to be a sensitive consultant. These people want the characters to be ugly to alleviate the guilt they feel for growing up rich, to rid themselves of their bourgeois nature
Mind you the executives and people with money behind these games are the same ones who were okay with buzzcut white male man. Everything is about money, always. This trend is changing now as we're seeing Gen Z and Gen Alpha reject the kooky notions of adults.

The idea is that white men won't stop buying games traditionally aimed at them while brown women will now buy whatever product they're churning out but this is ignoring the social and economic reality of the world. Funny thing is that Andor actually was successful and liked by old and new Star Wars fans alike, and that show genuinely was diverse, just not preachy about it. Because in the 2010s there was a change in artistic philosophy where artists believed that the physical look of a character was competing with their narrative and personality aesthetics, and that reducing the conventional physical attractiveness of a character placed greater emphasis on the character's story arc and personality in the eyes of the audience.

Of course this backfired and people focused on the physical looks of a character more, because a character that doesn't look attractive brings as much attention as a character that looks extra attractive (average in this case would be considered not-attractive because attraction requires being above the average).

The result is that we got a bunch of ugly or imperfect characters that we obsessively complain about when the artists wanted us to see the characters "true self".

A rejection of this philosophy wouldn't be 1-dimensional attractive characters. Instead it would be having the writers take the lead and design the character's personality and story arc, then transferring the person to the artists for visual fulfillment.
