I think the problem is just that a lot of american creators nowadays have a completely skewed moral compass.
I mean, this is the crux of the situation you described in your post. Sure it leads to a messy script and a messy series, but at the base of it all there is the fact that the author thinks shitting on good people just for who they are (instead of what they do) and being an arrogant cunt are actually good traits to have.
I think all of us have a position or two on some moral issues that go against the general consensus, but someone who isn't a complete autist should at least realize the context you operate in. If you think fucking children is good, and you want to represent it as a good thing in your comic, you should at least operate by understanding that the rest of the world thinks the exact opposite. Yet modern american creators think EVERYONE thinks like them and would agree on them even on the most batshit worldview.

I don't know where this behavior stems from, yes California is an amoral shithole but not every creator is from or works from there.
