...They literally grabbed some Famicom sprites for some of the Heart Star friends and probably didn't have time to come up with something better because NoA seemingly wanted the game out for SNES sooner than later.
Samus is the only really thematic cameo who uses original sprites, so I guess it doesn't answer the Metroid question...
