I've had many interactions with spirits in my life. Most are in the graveyard where hungry ghosts are known to roam, it's just a realm. There's only one conciousness, Deus-Pater AKA Dyeus-Phter. The Rain Man, Sky Father, so it's just passing from realm to realm. The animal world is a major one, and many animals stay in it for more than one life.
