Yeah, it was concluded that 1997 was the year that advancements and ideas in media industry, music, videogames, etc.. were diminishing and becoming less 'original' if you will, even though everyone thought things were going to become better indefinitely. Actualy, ideas for these industries were merging into one melting pot of more and more of the same, because creators wanted to play it safe with things that already had worked before. They gave that year a particular name, but i forgot.
