You would need to mobilize the nation and revamp the economy to be stable enough(in all ways you can think of) to support this mass national effort. All very akin to a "Great leap forward".

It could be done within 20-30 years if you strip the red tape(gotta be willing to take some astronaut casualties at first too) and actually rebuilt the industrial base that would be needed for all the parts and ships, space building platforms. That shit needs to be built here then sent to space, and since you now have built the things needed to create space based industry capable of making things up there, you can now spam industry / space farming.

Then you can colonize astral bodies like stable asteroids, moons and planets.

Our race could do it alone but we would never do it unless the planet is threatened under the current world situation. and or we would not be allowed because of external factors and threats from other races.

Our only real hope of it happening is if we made a tripartite agreement with Russia and China to collectively work together, drop our past issues, and most importantly of all subjugate the rest of the planet under the three hemispheres of US -RU- CH(white civilization and oriental civilization)....the 3 super nations could then utilize the worlds resources for the sake of human existence and most importantly because space has unlimited resources which will solve most of humanities issues overall.

We really could enter a true golden age but no one has the balls or the will to get it done.
