I’ve seen people argue that Popeye only wins certain matchups if he gets spinach, or that he has to lose first before eating it. Both of those takes are ridiculous because they’re constraining a character’s power by narrative rules. Base Popeye is stronger than most people give him credit for, and saying he’d automatically lose without spinach is just silly. Popeye, like other toon characters, still has his abilities regardless of narrative context. The only thing you can’t say is that his powers have no limits whatsoever, since that’s purely plot-driven. He still has plenty of ridiculous toon-force powers, but not unlimited, plot-mandated ones.
