postmarketOS is the only alternative OS that matters.
Every other OS is either an Android ROM, or a software glue between gimped outdated unmaintained downstream Android kernel and GNU/Linux userspace.
postmarketOS focuses on upstream Linux kernel, so you get the same experience as on standard Linux devices you're used to like PCs, laptops etc. It's literally an Alpine Linux on your phone.
Picrel is my phone running kernel 6.14, you can run pretty much 99.9% of any standard Linux software on it, graphical GTK/Qt apps etc.
If anything doesn't work, it's either because it relies on glibc'isms (pmOS uses musl) or because it's closed source and doesn't provide an arm64 binary.
You can use it as any other Linux device, you have root access, you can start an SSH daemon, you can use Docker, use cron, mount a NAS through NFS, backup your entire phone with rsync etc.
