As a pikmin 2 enjoyer I think this is was an extremely important mechanic for the games. 2's bosses highly rewarded you for using the c stick to dodge and could be very intense because there was no limit to the damage they could do if you messed up. Similarly because the pikmin were so easy to lose there was a big reason to investigate areas with just Olimar or Louie, leaving the other behind to keep your pikmin safe. You're encouraged to take advantage of how sturdy your characters are. 1 was already easy enough that you'd never hit the timer even if you totally lost your army, and this was the case in 3 and 4 as well. 2 getting rid of the timers altogether and instead trying to provide difficulty through lethality was a great move. That said, all 4 are still fantastic games.
