Because when the next round of sanctions come, the equity funds will be sold off in a flash sale when the markets are at their lowest (as they did with Russia equity funds).
They can't legally do this if you own the stocks directly (in most western countries).
The best thing would be to open an account in Russia or China and trade the stocks that way.
