The US saw this and was furious starting with Bush/Cheney (who is highly connected to Halliburton which focuses on oil) so they pushed for a regime change and assassination attempts

The economy was great with Chavez, and maduro changed basically nothing. Only change were sanctions, which maduro does not control.
