Apu was deemed a racist and harmful stereotype because panjeet couldn't handle the bantz and they (successfully) campaigned to have him removed from the show. They then told all of the people who complained to "do some research on Indian culture" and shut up. As a result, people discovered that India is a vile shit hole with garbage clogging up rivers and streets, people openly defecating in public and a culture of selfishness, rudeness and filth. That their people are nothing more than retarded, rude, delusional, selfish, deceitful, thieving rapists and their country is one of the biggest contributors to global pollution while having nothing to show for it.
This combined with a massive increase in Indian immigration to various other countries has resulted in the general populace's reaction to Indians going from seeing them as the eccentric fellows who worked at the fuel station to people openly calling for their genocide. It'll take generations and a massive cultural shift for India to salvage its reputation.
