Let me start by saying this. There is a difference between real nerds and pseud nerds. Pseud nerds are dudes that fit the media stereotype of real nerds in every way, they're awkward, autistic, lack testosterone; but they don't actually have the IQ to be real nerds, and their autistic interests are usually childish, like My Little Pony. Real nerds, by contrast, have the IQ and taste to be autistic about physics, great literature, Stanley Kubrick, etc. and in fact don't often physically fit the media stereotype physically. They're really what the media makes the bespectacled stinky gawky geeks out to be, which is just a media reversal of reality, similar to how the media always makes jocks and Stacies the bullies, when they're usually popular for being cool with everyone. Now, with that in mind, it is the pseud type of nerd that is a "serious" anime fan. They don't have the discernment to like something with real artistic merit, but they have to be autistic about SOMETHING, and they settle on "elevated" anime because it's gay and appeals to pencil wristed faggots. Furthermore, because of their own subconscious association with nerds being "high IQ specialists", they believe that their preference for "elevated" anime over shonen is patrician, since they have to be patrician about SOMETHING. In reality anime is just slop and shonen is chad for leaning into it and not trying to be something anime isn't. It knows that anime is slop and just says, "Yes." It doesn't pretend to be Beethoven. But that's not something that appeals to pseuds.
