Here's my theory. They purposefully conflate ST and OWM, which is obviously not hard to do. The Will and Mike of ST are quite ugly. The Will and Mike of OWM, however, each have a /cm/ design. So most will follow the standard ST lore while choosing to depict the OWM versions of the characters.
