this is how it played out for me too. though in my case I did reps for close to a year before I read my first visual novel (mainly because I kept telling myself I wasn't ready). incidentally, loli eroge is what motivated me to actually learn the language. now I have a JLPT N3 and planning to go for N2 or N1 this year.
