It's a tuning knob mostly and something to add and for people to get excited for every now and then - they come with a new momo so everyones always happy to guess what's coming before announcements etc.
I'd save your flowers though - if you're new enough to be asking this stuff then you probably don't need to be dumping flowers around. Affection is capped at 20 pre-5* and it's very easy to hit and then be bottlenecked via headpats and lessons. Save your gifts for 5*s, and even then flowers are universally loved, so you might be kicking yourself if you use them early and find someone else more worthy later.
