People have been conditioned by what I call "Slick slop" and what I mean by that is studied cinema from the point of a committee that is making all the "right calls". It's in other words soulless but competent. They know what pitfalls to avoid, they know exactly what to do to ellicit a certain reaction in an audience, they know how to avoid the awkward humps. It's a consistent flatline, it has no life to it.
That is why you see that response. They're so conditioned to watching stuff like The Force Awakens, Stranger Things, etc that anything made by real people is weird and off-putting.
