well i know drinking.. heavy drinking is a long stood cultural element.
i've been reading Tolstoy and Dostoevsky and all that i have read so far has included numerous individuals with serious drinking issues and 90% of the time they mention vodka explicitly.

so it's certainly a real and engrained thing in the russian psyche
