Maybe earlier in the decade but once all the wartime contracts dried up, a lot of people ended up being out of work by the mid-late 50s, resulting in the Eisenhower Recession. While a lot of blacks did manage to find work, the recession disproportionately effected blacks, since blacks often relied on government work in sectors like manufacturing that were particularly hit hard when those contracts ended. Some would argue that was one of the impetus' for the Space Race in the late 50s through to the 1960s was to give aerospace and defense contractors an excuse to receive government contracts in peacetime
