Dope sickness is pretty awful. However imo benzo withdrawals are far worse. But usually people going through benzo withdrawals have better access to medical assistance. The thing with dope sickness is that on its own, you can power through it but you're going to be flat on your ass alternating between shitting, vomiting, showering, and sleeping for several days before it even remotely starts to get better. If you have a job that won't let you take several days off to get clean then you basically HAVE to keep maintaining the addiction and taper off slowly. If you're already homeless or in a bad situation then there's no fucking way realistically you'll suffer through it. At its worst you'll do just about anything to get your fix and escape from the suffering.

Quitting dope cold turkey is a lot like sticking your hand in a pot onto a hot stove and holding it there. It's physically possible but the pain is so intense you are going to remove your hand unless you're absurdly strong willed.

This is all part of the plan. The reason the city does nothing about this is because they lower property values. This allows them and their pals to buy everything up dirt cheap and then once they own all the property they will clean all the junkies out within just a few weeks or even days and profit immensely as they develop and revitalize the area for yuppies.
