I also have to agree with "Arceus dammit" making me grimace.

Not quite the same, but I read a PMD story years ago where the writer incorporated the stairs literally into the story. The characters came to stairs in the middle of some woods. The characters walked up above the trees and... were on the next floor of the area. I'm not quite sure why he wrote it that way instead of the more reasonable "they're going further into the forest" angle.

I dunno, something about interpreting a game mechanic so literally made me seethe so hard I stopped reading, but it stuck with me well over a decade since reading it.
