A bit off tangent but your observation made me realize that a lot of the new student characters made since season 2 are 2D, aren’t they?
Sarah
Julius and his posse
Jodie
Billy
Josh
Peter
HotdogGuy
Clare and her boyfriend
The only “character” I can think of that’s not 2D is Wilson Bilson and he’s basically been gone since his one minute of fame.
I’m not trying to totally disregard these students or anything but… most of them are almost kinda disposable that I find it hard to count for anything? Sarah of course has been elevated beyond most of the school cast (I would say excessively so) and even HotdogGuy has more episodes than others too, but Julius is more of a force than a character, Anais failed friends don’t really matter ever (outside of Billy but his usage sinks right after S4. Frequency matters and short bursts like his is a huge issue itself.), and Peter has a communication issues that we don’t know what the hell his deal is until his parents pop up. Clare is also a character that is just background noise once her first episode rolled by too.
I really don’t know but they feel indicative of an issue that the writers never knew how to handle its secondary school cast and that it was easier to spit out something new and disposable rather than work with what they had. After a point a new character stops being a unique thing, and that being looked along side with the decayed use of the actual stock student characters feels almost illuminating on the show’s massive issues in balancing its cast. Some characters are too excessively used while others aren’t used enough and some characters effectively exist to kek the characters that really need more episodes. Like who the fuck is going to want another Peter episode over fucking Anton seriously
