Am I being crazy or does this little scene have a deeper meaning?

>Gangle puts on her happy mask while shooting a tommy gun, something she really wanted to do
>She falls from a high height on her face, but her mask doesn't shatter
>She shows visible surprise at the fact it isn't broken

Is the mask breaking a psychological thing? It seems more reliant to damage when she's having a good time.
