The 30-year war in the 1600’s began because the Holy Roman Emperor at the time wanted to spread Catholicism to his outer territories such as Bohemia, even though the empires power had eroded significantly by then. When the envoys of the emperor arrived at Bohemia in 1618 demanding that the royalty convert to Catholicism as the emperor demanded, they threw them both out the window of the castle 70 ft into manure, which randomly spared their lives.

In the final months of the war in 1648, Sweden’s forces invaded a special place called Hradcany Castle which still exists today, where the previous Emperor Rudolf II stored his famous collection called the “cabinet of curiosities”. The reason why we have the 3 planetary laws of motion is because Emperor Rudolf II invited Johannes Kepler to this castle as his patron working with another famous astrologist at the name known as Tycho Brahe. They collaborated on information and created the Rudolphine Star Catalogue, the most accurate version of the stars by a large margin, which allowed Kepler to discover the 3 laws around 1618, beginning the heliocentric idea, in which the Earth revolves around the sun instead of the other way around; If it wasn’t for Emperor Rudolf II’s interest in esoteric knowledge, none of this would have happened. Galileo presented the same idea through a telescope in 1633, and he was condemned by the church and forced to recant, as it was dangerous since anyone could verify it.

One of the hundreds of items taken from Hradcany Castle was The Gigas Codex. It was made in the 1200’s and the legend is that a monk who was sentenced to die told the monastery he was under he could create a book that contained all the knowledge of humanity in a single night. What’s strange about the book is the penmanship has not aged and it would appear to have taken 20 years to write. It’s currently in the Swedish National Library.
